Tyler Griffin is an artist currently studying at York St John University. Griffin works by collaging found materials and detailed oil paintings to explore themes of childhood memory and dreams, what we choose to forget and what we must. His practice is situated within folk art due to the use of ethically sourced bones and feathers, and the religious concepts underpinning his work.

The work has a continuous theme of nostalgia, heavily featuring fades hues of yellow and brown, creating a sense of blurred edges that reflect the distant quality of a memory. The use of found cardboard promotes the handmade aesthetic of his work, hinting to the works intended position within cultural sites and community spaces. The materiality of found mediums also lends itself the process of making as a child, often using receipts from a parent’s pocket or scrap paper intended for the bin. While these are often provided with the intention of being throwaway pieces, to occupy a child’s time, this way of working transforms these materials and child like imagination into a narrative of experiencing the adult world through an alternate lens.
